Video still (VT Acidentado: PQ? / PN!)

VT Acidentado: PQ?/PN!’s title was inspired in a video by Walter Silveira and Tadeu Jungle titled VT Preparado: AC/JC. The idea for our work, however, came up from an article by the late journalist Paulo Francis, in which he stated that there was no culture in Bahia. For research, we watched a few video works then produced in Brazil and that were shown in festivals such as Videobrasil. These were mainly experimental and centered on Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Belo Horizonte.

It was one the first works, made with our hearts with very few resources, and with no major aesthetic concerns or research and development of a videographic language.

VT Acidentado expresses a good-humored indignation with the fact that the Brazilian Northeast was seen as a “nullity” by the Southeast in general and by a part of its thinking minds; they ludicrously despise our widely rich culture, as if it were only made of goods to consume in temples of art and culture of large centers around the world. And the Brazilian Northeast is peripheral to São Paulo just as Brazil is peripheral to New York, for instance.

Other connections

We didn’t have many references that contributed directly to create the work. It came up in an impetus, building up intuitively. Perhaps the only reference was the will to just “say something,” since I grew up watching Luis Buñuel, Glauber, Truffaut, Godard, all these people.
