Transe, deslocamento de dimensões
2013"Transe is the continuation of a research initiated in 2000, and it originates from an understanding of the artistic process to conceive the piece Deslocamento de Dimensões.
The roots of my body of work hark back to Candomblé and Yoruba rituals. In Transe, I address the artist as the 'easel' of an orisha, someone who captures the embryo of a creation, transports it over the body and projects it onto the physical plane. The piece sets forth questionings about immediate readings of daily life. At first glance, it appears to be merely one- or two-dimensional, but as we go around it, it offers other possible readings, like the perception of other layers of existence, which surpass the physical plane. The use of engraving, combined with Tracy Collins’ video projection, highlights this dialogue between language and space.
This concept is simultaneously fed by several aspects, such as the use of engraving in a non-traditional field: a non-serial engraving in which the matrix (with a sole application of paint) is reprinted to exhaustion on the paper, until its image fades. The engraving is also used as an object and, in installations, it serves as a support (easel) for images in motion to be projected on.
It is safe to say that the source of my creation lies in Afro-Brazilian roots. However, in the past 13 years, these roots have mingled with influences from the thinking of Glauber Rocha and Walter Benjamin, and their investigations on altered states of consciousness – also found in statements of artists like Agnes Martin, John Coltrane and Clementina de Jesus.
One could say that my work deals with psychic experiences that transcend time and space through alterations in human perception. My process deals with the state of trance through this ‘Glauberian’ approach, as a dialogue with the creative source in which the artist is creature at times, and creator at others.
The piece presents at least two moments of visualization: the experience of the passive object, lit on the wall, and the experience of displacement caused by Tracy Collins’ video projected onto the cubes. This displacement refers precisely to the trance, i.e. the possibility to propose new developments and layers of reading and fruition of the object."
