Perspectiva naval
2012"The process that led me to conceive the sculptures I develop today is directly linked to my trajectory. Initially, I created urban interventions, experiencing the city and using it as a medium for action, reflection and inspiration. At that time, besides doing personal projects, I worked with artist collectives and had a chance to experiment with different mediums and techniques, tackling different subjects. Later on, I started creating productions in which my urban intervention research became an aesthetical and conceptual reference for work developed in the studio. Presently, I dedicate myself to sculpture and installation.
During my formative years, the freedom of transition and experimentation afforded by graffiti led me down unexpected paths, but I always kept in touch with the streets. In my latest set of urban intervention pieces, Projeto Reciclagem (Recycling Project: sculptures made by rearranged garbage found in bins, using the bins themselves as the foundation and structural basis for the composition), I started acquiring a taste for three-dimensionality and materiality.
As my work grew increasingly elaborate, the need for pre-production before the pieces were presented in the streets led me to work in a more structured studio. Naturally, I ended up bringing the streets into the studio, completely reversing their initial roles. I sought ideas, references and materials, and then applied them to pieces that would not necessarily go back to the streets, but that would acknowledge their own emergence through traces of a society reflected on its waste and consumption.
In my studio, relationships and dialogues are constant. I work with artists from different generations and this is supremely important to develop a process. My studio partners include Paulo Whitaker, a painter from the 1980s, whe is the most experienced one among us and always instigates reflection and discussion on what is being produced. Another great artist and friend is Henrique Oliveira. His incredible works always encourage everyone to outdo themselves. From the youngest generation, there are Renata Egreja and Chico Togni."

"I have seen lots of pieces by the architects Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, who work in architecture with the freedom and propriety of fine artists. Other artists who have influenced me include Richard Deacon, Matta Clark and Anish Kapoor", says Rodrigo Sassi.
