Parálisis
2005Throughout my career, some works are the product of a specific investigation, while others come up in a more unexpected way. Although it is often intepreted as an artwork that espouses an ecologic or anti-urban statement, Parálisis comes from a perspective that is more about the shackles of middle-class aspirations.
I created Parálisis at a time when I was trying out things that were very different from one another. I did what sprang to my mind without caring about coherence or whether what I was doing followed a line of inquiry. In retrospect, it seems to me that this piece was closer to a music video, and therefore to television, than to the world of “artworks” in a strict sense.
The video was made very quickly in Mexico City before I travelled to Brazil for the first time. Even though I could just as well have made this video in Lima, Peru, where I come from. Many Lima residents might confuse footage of Mexico City as being of Lima or vice versa. Those streets, those bushes, could just as well be from a “Latin American city” in the abstract sense. This video is a musical depiction of a state of imprisonment.
