"L’Arbre d’oublier takes place in Ouidah, one of the biggest slave trafficking ports in Africa. It is the site of the so-called 'Tree of Forgetfulness', which African men were forced to encircle 7 times, in a symbolic ritual intended for them to forget their families, land and history and become slaves. By walking around the tree 437 times in the opposite direction, I retrace a trajectory that is at once historical and extremely symbolic, conversing with the past and retrieving the histories of enslaved blacks."

Text sent by Paulo Nazareth on the occasion of the subscription to the 19th Festival (January 2015)
