Fluxus
2010"With FLUXUS, I was trying to represent time through southern Chilean landscape, understanding the intimate dynamics of nature.
The aesthetical framing of this particular piece reminds me traditional chinese paintings. I shot vertically (9:16) in order to portray a unique Patagonian landscape where nothing seems to happen other than the monumental movement of a waterfall. The appearance of the river from a hanging glacier and the smooth and subtle movement of a few flowers on the foreground suggest the rhythm of the video.
I wanted to create a new contemplation state, referring to the poetics of the contemplation of time. The waterfall represents impermanence, as opposed to changelessness. Just like in an oriental symbol of existence. The continuity of being: rebirth, maturing and constant evolution.
My production has been always related to the discovery of secrets behind the natural dynamics of time. I understand FLUXUS as a video that opens possibilities for one to experience the ‘presence’ of the landscape and its rhythms through observation of natural phenomena, without any other element of narration other than the basic qualities of the moving image. I conceived FLUXUS as a sort of space-time portal.
When I made this video, my main exercise was to get lost in isolated locations without any visible human presence. Just observing the landscape with natural light conditions. This process pushed me slowly toward a conscious state of tranquillity. I could transform my anxious spirits, from the overloaded pace of city life, reconnecting with the rhythm of natural cycles.
I’m concerned about the future of Chilean landscape. Now, it is extremely fragile because of the ambitious mining projects that companies from Europe, Canada and North America are developing all over the country, without considering the impact on the environment. They are practically moving glaciers, damming rivers to extract gold, silver, copper, gas. All this to generate the necessary energy for the continuity of huge foreign industries."
