Escultura Abstracta
2014“The piece consists of a pattern that is a copy of a decorative brick marketed by a local Peruvian company during the sixties and seventies. The original pattern was usually used as a protective wall around houses in the middleclass-midcentury neighborhoods of the city. I have always been fascinated by its design, and there were various different patterns built at that time that are now all over the city.
The artwork reflects an important period in Peruvian (and Latin American) recent history, one in which the promise of modern times was deemed to achieve progress for the common person. These political ideas have been repeated throughout the past century, and my research revolves around them and how the modern architecture in Latin America was associated with a political promise of progress that has never been really fulfilled. Through my work, I analyze that promise of progress by bringing these ideas to the current context.
In Escultura Abstracta, the material and size isolate the piece from its architectural reference, opening it to various different readings. While the original brick was made of concrete, the replica is made of polyurethane foam, which makes it extremely light and much more fragile. Therefore, it's not solely an architectural piece anymore; it has also become an abstract work.”

“The main reference for the piece is the original pattern, and there are some secondary references, such as Richard Serra’s Tilted Arc and the pre-Hispanic lattice work in the archeological site of Chan Chan, in northern Peru.
A good reference about the Peruvian case is Sharif S. Kahatt's book Utopías construídas. A broader reference about Latin America can be found in the catalogs of the MoMA’s two shows about Latin American 20th century architecture: 1955 Henry-Russell Hitchcock’s Latin American Architecture since 1945, and the recent Latin America in Construction."
