Alegoria
2012"Based on documental footage taken in 2010, during the Samba School Rádio Farol’s carnival parade in the city of Porto Velho, Rondônia, we realized that some of the recorded material could be used with an experimental approach. By casually readjusting the camera’s focus, we planned on eventually using the footage to create one single shot.
At that time, we had other projects underway apart from the documentary, so we stored the material in our data bank to review it from time to time, trying to think of potential concepts. Two years later, by chance, we stumbled upon a song in public domain [archive.org]. Then, we had an insight and edited the piece in just one day.
During the editing process, we suppressed the samba-enredo song, which was part of the original recorded soundtrack, and used only the footage. We shunned transitional effects, opting for straight cuts instead, and we tried to avoid a commonplace, the audio visual approach usually associated with this folkloric rhythm. This decision allowed for a unique aesthetic in both images and music.
When we got together to create and compose this piece, we aimed for a poetic result that would express the collective. Each of us tried to make their own contribution, adding their own ‘spices’ to a dialogic construct based on the allegories that were possible."

A member of Coletivo Madeirista, Joéser Alvarez relates the origin of the group’s name, established in a manifesto signed by its members in the 1990s, taking their cue from the Madeira River that bathes the city of Porto Velho
The members of the Coletivo Madeirista mention some key references, including “the mystical narrative of egg-like spiritual shapes in the book The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge, by Carlos Castañeda, a few remnants of our own existential crises, the reality/fiction pairing, the parallel universes of quantum physics, schizoanalysis,...”.
